Game 40 Recap-
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 Wednesday Night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. RH SP Todd Wellemeyer got the win(4-1 on the season) with 7 excellent innings, he allowed only 2 hits and 1 run while walking 3 and striking out 5. The Cardinals offense produced 3 runs with outs(2 sac flys and a fielders choice) and was led by SS Cesar Izturis and 3b Troy Glaus, who both had 3 hits.
Pirates LH Paul Maholm battled for 6 innings, he had St.Louis runners on base all night(11 hits, 3 walks) but kept the team in the game and got some key outs. Izturis produced the 1st run with a fielders choice in the 2nd, Glaus drove in another run with a rbi double in the 3rd. 1b Albert Pujols and RF Ryan Ludwick both hit sacrifice fly’s in the 6th for 4-0 Cardinals lead. C Yadier Molina hit an rbi single off of recent Pittsburgh call up RH Marino Salas in the 8th.
The Pittsburgh hitters did not do much vs Wellemeyer and he was clearly the story of the game. After a first inning single by SS Luis Rivas, he allowed only 3 walks prior to a hit by 3b Jose Bautista in the 8th. He also got some great defensive help from CF Rick Ankiel with a homer robbing catch in the 2nd inning off of 1b Adam Laroche. After that, Wellemeyer really settled down and the Pirates looked lost.
Star of the Game-
Wellemeyer- Clearly the story– maybe the best pitches game by a starter vs the Pirates this season.
Pirates Notes-
The team placed C Ryan Doumit on the 15 day DL today, he is likely to miss 4 weeks and will not need surgery. Triple A C Raul Chavez was recalled, he was hitting .306 with 3 homer runs and 13 rbi over 26 games. Ronny Paulino started in Doumit’s spot today….. Rivas got the start at SS and had one of the Pirates 4 hits
