Three Late Homeruns Boost Pirates to Win in Season Opener

by @ 7:03 pm. Filed under 2007 Pirates

This game looked like it was going to be ugly.  Roy Oswalt was cruising along and it looked like a solid start by Zach Duke was going to go to waste.  Then the Pirates found a chink in the armor and Nate McClouth hit a pinch hit solo homerun to make it a 2-1 game.  The Astros went to the pen and the Pirates made them pay when Xavier Nady went yard in the ninth to tie the game and send it into extra frames.  Then in the tenth, the Pirates struck out again and Jason Bay came up huge with a two run shot to push the Pirates to a 4-2 win.

Duke gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk in seven innings of work.  Matt Capps picked up the win and then Salomon Torres picked up the save with a perfect tenth.

Ian Snell gets the start tomorrow and hopefully we won’t need the comeback this time.  I know the Astros have been good in the past but they look vulnerable this year and it’s be nice to jump all over them early and pick up a few quick wins.
