Game 97 Recap-
The Colorado Rockies roughed up a kid pitcher, while they got a tremendous performance from their own starter, helping them defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-1 at Coors Field Saturday in Denver. Reserve OF Scott Podsednik had 4 hits(3 doubles) & 2 runs, while LH Jorge De La Rosa(4-5,6.71) pitched a tough 6 innings to get the win. The loss was the 4th in a row for the Pirates and the 5th of their last 6.
The solid Rockies offense punished RH Yoslan Herrera(0-1,2nd ML start) for 7 runs over 1 2/3 innings. The youngster was done in by small ball and station to station hitting, allowing 8 hits & 7 runs with 1 strikeout. After Pirates C Ryan Doumit singled home 2b Freddy Sanchez in the 1st, the Rockies plated 5 in their opening frame. Rockies 1b(at first with Todd Helton injured) Garrett Atkins scored the first run on a sacrifice fly, C Yorvit Torrealba(single), 3b Ian Stewart(single) & Omar Quintanilla(2 run double) followed with rbi hits.
Herrera tried to straighten himself out but was gone after 2 more runs scored in the 2nd and he could not get the final out of the inning. Atkins singled in another run, RF Brad Hawpe doubled in the final run. Positively, the 3 relievers the Pirates pitched the remainder of the game allowed 9 base runners over 6 1/3 innings with no runs. RHs T.J. Beam(3 1/3 innings), Marino Salas(2) & Franquelis Osoria(1) all kept the Black and Yellow in the game. The Pirates offense could do nothing vs De La Rosa(6 IP,7 hits,1 run with 7 Ks and 2 walks) and 3 relievers & the final was 7-1.
