It looks like Russell wasn’t the Pirates first choice. He was the fall back plan when Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell said he wasn’t interesting. This was one of those low risk moves the Pirates are used to making and it’s hardly a hot bed where managers are fighting to coach for so sometimes we have to just take what we can get.
