1- LHP Paul Maholm threw a bullpen session Tuesday and reported no problems. He is set to start Saturday at Florida
2- Manager John Russell stopped short of calling his catching situation a platoon referring to the split of Ronny Paulino and Ryan Doumit as a “tandem”. Ryan appears to get the work when facing right handed starters and Ronny southpaws. This is an interesting situation because you also have an offense(Doumit) vs defense(Paulino) scenario as well. Doumit can also play some 1b and OF in a pinch.
3- The Pirates and 1b Adam Laroche have broken off long term contract talks and it appears they will not negotiate again this season. Laroche is arbitration eligible for the next 2 seasons and a good candidate to be traded with the club holding highly regarded 1b-OF Steve Pearce in Triple A Indianapolis.
