RF Steve Pearce broke up a scoreless tie in the 12th with a run scoring double, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-0 Friday Night at Citizens Bank Park in Pennsylvania. Pearce’s hit plated C Ryan Doumit , who doubled. 2b Freddy Sanchez scored an insurance run with an infield single. The game featured great pitching and defense in an offensive ball park. Both starters went 7 innings and combined to give up 6 hits.
Pirates LH Paul Maholm(7-7,3.76) was outstanding over his 7 innings, he allowed 5 hits and struck out 10 with 3 walks. 5 relievers followed and did not allow a run over 5 innings, the pen gave up 1 hit and walked 6 with a K. The Pirates need a great catch by new LF Brandon Moss in the 12th to keep the lead. He made a great run catch of a drive from 2b Chase Utley, then threw in to double off a runner. Philles LF Pat Burrell sent Moss to the wall with a drive in the 8th.
