Game 136 Recap-
CC Sabathia(9-0,1.43 era in the NL) pitched a complete game 1 hitter to lead the Milwaukee Brewers over the Pittsburgh Pirates,7-0 at PNC Park Sunday and handing the Pirates their ninth straight defeat. That hit, however, is in dispute. 3b Andy Laroche’s 5th inning infield single was clearly an error as Sabathia fumbled the comebacker, as his Manager Ned Yost calmly explained post game. “He accomplished a no-hitter and wasn’t given what he deserved. That should have been a no-hitter,” Yost said. “That’s a stinking no-hitter we all got cheated from. I feel horrible for CC.”
2b Richie Weeks led off the game with a home run,, while 3b Bill Hall(7th inning 2 run double), 1b Prince Fielder(8th inning single) and CF Gabe Kalper(8th inning 2 run double)had rbi hits late in the game to break open a close game. Fielder, LF Ryan Braun and Hall all had 2 hits apiece while RF Corey Hart had 2 runs. Sabathia struck out 11 and used 117(79 strikes) pitches for the 1 hitter.
RH Keff Karstens(2-4,3.62) pitched well vs a very good lineup in the Brewers, over 6 1/3 innings, he gave up 5 hits and 3 runs with 1 walk. RH Tyler Yates(5.20) and LH Sean Burnett(5.24) both followed and gave up 2 runs apiece.
The story of this game, however, will be the disputed hit. “That’s a joke. That wasn’t even close. Whoever the scorekeeper was absolutely denied major league baseball a nice no-hitter right there,” Yost said. “They threw hit up on the board even before LaRoche hit the bag. That’s a play CC makes easily, throws him out by 10 feet — to me it’s a no-brainer.That’s sad. It really is sad.” The Brewers plan to put together a DVD and sent it MLB in an attempt the get the call reversed. Sabathia was calm about the call postgame,”The ball was still rolling and I probably should have picked it up with my glove. We probably wouldn’t be having this conversation,” Sabathia said. “I think if I pick it up with my glove, I get him.” His Left Fielder Braun said, “”There’s no question that’s a no-hitter.”
Star of the Game-
Sabathia- I am smarter than the official scorer- no dispute here!
Milwaukee is 11-1 with 9 consecutive wins vs the Pirates, including a 5-1 record at PNC Park. Prior to the season they had a 22-43 mark in Pennsylvania…. Day off Monday, start 3 game series vs Reds at Cincinnati
Game 135 Recap-
The Milwaukee Brewers used a balanced offensive attack(16 hits) and veteran RH Jeff Suppan(10-7,4.49) was solid, continuing the Milwaukee Brewers dominance of the Pittsburgh Pirates,11-3 Saturday Night at PNC Park in Pennsylvania. RF Corey Hart(3 hits) and CF Mike Cameron homered(4 rbi), while SS JJ Hardy added 4 hits, helping the Pirates lose their 9th straight(57-78). The Brewers are 19-7 in August and have won 7 of 8.
Suppan, who is 5-0 in August and 12-3 for his ex-team(pitched here in 2003), was outstanding and kept the Pirates off balance all game. He allowed 3 hits and 2 runs(2 run homer by LF Brandon Moss in the 6th) while walking and striking out 2. “You always want to contribute, and sometimes regardless if you win or lose, just going out there and throwing quality innings up there gives your team a chance,” Suppan said. “For whatever reason, that’s where the streak has come from.” His manager liked what he saw,”He threw the ball really, really well,” Brewers manager Ned Yost said. “He was changing speeds, spotting the ball well on the attack. He’s throwing good.”Any time you’re going to have success it’s going to be because you got good starting pitching and your defense is good,” Yost added. “It’s always going to be the case.”
Pirates LH Paul Maholm(8-8,3.81) appears to be either hurt(has complained of fatigue/pain) or has hit the wall, in 5 1/3 innings, he gave up 7 hits and 6 runs with 1 walk and 3 Ks. He was touched for 2 home runs(Hart and Cameron) . His Manager, clearly, has his back,”He’s done a phenomenal job all year and you’ve got to figure that at some point he’s going to hit a bump in the road because everyone does,” Pirates manager John Russell said. The young lefty offered no excuses and blamed himself postgame,”When you throw the ball down the middle, I don’t care who you’re playing, it’s not going to get major league hitters out,” Maholm said. “For the first few innings every time I tried to [pitch inside], it was right down the middle. Cameron’s home run was right down the middle. Sure, they’re a good hitting team. But when you throw pathetic pitches, it really doesn’t work.”
Star of the Game-

Game 134 Recap-
LF Ryan Braun made Pirates LH Tom Gorzelanny pay for his 1st inning wildness with a tremendous 3 run shot to right, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday night at PNC Park. Gorzelanny allowed a walk and hit to start the inning and Braun then took him deep for his 34th homer.Braun is now 8 for 17 with 3 home runs and 9 rbis vs the veteran LH, although he did not think it was a big deal postgame. “It’s just lefties in general,” Braun said. “I normally see the ball well. He’s a good pitcher. Hopefully, I can keep that up. We’ll see what happens.”
RH David Bush(9-9,4.12) was strong over 6 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run(solo shot to Pirates All Star CF Nate McLouth in the 4th) while striking out 2 and walking 2. Gorzelanny also pitched well and after the homer, he retired 21 of 24 and the oppostion manager noticed, “He started banging strikes and keeping the ball down,” Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. “We never really had another opportunity. He pitched really, really well.”
For the vanquished Pirates, loser of 12 of 14 games, not much to get excited about. McLouth continues to battle hard and put out but Gorzelanny has looked better and closer to the 2007 version(14-10,3.88). He sounded like someone who has turned a corner after the loss, “I didn’t get down on myself after the first inning,” said Gorzelanny, who’s lost his past three major-league starts, all to Milwaukee. “I put it behind me and didn’t let it get me down.”
The underrated Brewers bullpen was also strong for 2 1/3 innings. LH Brian Shouse(4-1,2.35,14 holds) went the first 2/3 innings, while RH Eric Gagne(4-2,5th hold,6.23) got the game to the ninth. RH Salomon Torres(6-3,2.44) earned his 26th save with only 14 pitches on 3 ground ball outs.
I like this message…
Pirates Manager John Russell post game:”He threw the ball better than he has all year,” he said. “But at some point, our pitchers have to understand that a good outing is a win. … You can lose a game in the first inning. We have to change the mentality that someone threw well, but lost 4-3, 10-5, or whatever.”
Star of the Game-
Braun- With one swing, he totaled 3 of the 4 runs in the game
SS Jack Wilson was 1 for 4 and has a hit in 13 of his last 14 home games… Russell intends to employ a 6 man rotation September… McLouth and 2b Freddy Sanchez had 2 hits apiece

Pirates LH Paul Maholm(8-7,3.62) vs Brewers RH Jeff Suppan(9-7,4.58)
Game 133 Recap-
After destroying Pirates pitchers most of the season, the 1st place Chicago Cubs used fundamentals and execution to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates,2-0 Wednesday at PNC Park in Pennsylvania. Chicago rode 2 7th inning runs from a ground out and suicide squeeze to the seres sweeping win, while veteran RH Jason Marquis(9-7,4.52) was brilliant over 7 innings(95 pitches), allowing 5 hits and no runs while K-ing 3. The Cubs went 14-4 for the year vs the black and yellow, more importantly, the Pirates have now lost a season high 7 in a row and 11 of 13.
Pirates LH Zach Duke(4-13,5.14) pitched great and deserved better. Over 8 innings, he allowed only 7 hits and the 2 runs while striking out 6 and walking 2. The 7th inning did him in as CF Reed Johnson bunted his way on and red hot RF-2b Mark Derosa doubled to start the frame. 2b Ronny Cedeno’s ground out to 3rd scoring the 1st run and backup C Henry Blanco’s perfectly executed squeeze plated the 2nd.”I thought it was going to go out [foul],” Blanco said. “It stayed in and everything was good and I got an RBI. Once again, we’ve got to do the little things.”
The Pirates could do little all day vs Marquis, premier RH power arms Carlos Marmol(2.71, 25 holds) and closer Kerry Wood(2.63,27 saves) both struck out 2 batters in their inning of work. This series was about the Cubs, to me, the best team in the NL. They can play anytime of game and look and sound like a World Series bound club. “That’s the sign of a good team, one that can win in different ways,” Reed Johnson said. “We’ve been able to win the last couple of weeks by sitting back and swinging the bat. Today we weren’t swinging the bats very well, so we were able to play a little bit different game and it ended up working out for us.”
Star of the Game-
Marquis- Part of the depth of what I believe is the best pitching staff in the NL
Team is close to 82 loses(76), when they do it will be a ML record 16 consecutive losing seasons… club was shut out for the 5th time this season… Duke is winless in his last nine games vs the Cubs, he has 4 wins at home but has lost his last 6 decisions at PNC Park.. C Raul Chavez had 2 hits
Team is off Thursday, start a 3 game series vs the Milwaukee Brewers Friday at PNC Park
Game 132 Recap-
In a game that featured 28 hits and 23 runs, rookie C Geovany Soto had the biggest hit a 3 run double in the 7 run 7th, helping the Chicago Cubs defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-9 at PNC Park Tuesday in Pennsylvania. The Cubs have beaten the Pirates 13 times in 17 games, were lead by Soto’s 2 3 run doubles and a home run, while 1b Derek Lee had 2 rbis.
In this offensive explosion, neither starter was around after the 5th inning, as both Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano(13-5,3.53) and RH Ian Snell(5-10,5.77) had rough outings. The Cubs RH went 4 1/3 giving up 8 hits, 6 runs with 3 Ks and 4 walks. Zambrano, however, had a strong bullpen behind him as 6 relievers combined to allow 2 earned runs. Snell in 4 innings was touched for 5 hits and 5 runs with 2 Ks and 4 walks. The young veteran tried to remain post game,” We made some bonehead mistakes,” Snell said. “But this team is leaving everything it has on the field. … We got rid of some good players and it’s hurt us. But people need to get over that.”
The game turned with the Pirates bullpen coming unglued in the 7th, new comer RH Craig Hansen(0-2, 8.10) was a mess and did not retire a batter while walking 3 batters and allowing 4 runs with 1 hit(Soto’s double). By comparison to the Cubs relief corps, the 6 Pirates allowed 9 runs.”We did some things offensively but, obviously, we didn’t pitch very well,” manager John Russell said after the Pirates walked nine, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches.
Star of the Game-
Soto- Give him the rookie of the year award- NOW
Cubs have scored 10 runs or more vs the Pirates in 6 games…Morgan had 3 hits while Doumit, Laroche, Moss,Mientkiewicz, Sanchez and Wilson had 2 apiece… Club left 12 men on base…Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano had a huge error on a dropped fly ball in the 6th but had a big day with the bat, going 3 for 6 with 2 runs

Pirates LH Zach Duke(4-12,5.29) vs Cubs RH Jason Marquis(8-7,4.73)
Game 130 Recap-
Ex- Pirates Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in 3 runs, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 12-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday at PNC Park in Pennsylvania. Veteran lefty Ted Lilly(13-7,4.23) was tough for innings to get the win, while CF Jim Edmonds added 3 hits and all star rf Kosuke Fukudome also had 3 hits with 4 rbi. Pirates LF Brandon Moss and 1b Adam Laroche(2 run) homered. Chicago is now 12-4 vs Pittsburgh in the season series.
Pirates RH Jeff Karstens(2-3,3.48) had his roughest outing since coming to the NL. Over 3 innings, he allowed 6 hits and 5 runs with 1 walk and a K. Every Cubs starter except rookie X Geovany Soto recorded a hit and either scored a run or drove in one. Pirates RH Jason Davis(5.54) got kicked around in 2 innings, allowing 5 runs, LH Sean Burnett(4.57) also had a tough night, giving up 2 in his 2 frames.
Star of the Game-
Cubs team- Everyone did something in this game, best club in the NL
McLouth was back starting in CF after missing time with flu, he was 1 for 3. Nyjer Morgan took over late in the blowout…. Moss and 2b Freddy Sanchez had 2 hits apiece to pace the team…RH RP Denny Bautista was the only pitcher not to give up any runs over his 2 frames
Something to think about….
Team is 7-16 since trading LF Jason Bay( a week after RF Xavier Nady), since then they have scored 5 runs twice and have scored 3 or less 15 times. This team had a hidden gem with the best offensive OF in the NL statistically, shame on this management team for dumping both players! If you where CF Nate McLouth you would have the flu too!
Game 2 of 3 vs Cubs, PNC Park, Pittsburgh
Pirates RH Ian Snell(5-10,5.60) vs Cubs RH Carlos Zambrano(13-5,3.29)
Game 129 Recap-
SS J.J Hardy’s rbi single scored 2b Richie Weeks to give the Milwaukee Brewers an exciting 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in 12 innings at Miller Park in Wisconsin. Hardy hit the pitch from RH Jason Davis(1-4,3.75) to center to get the win on his own bobblehead day, “It’s just a coincidence that it’s bobble day for me that it happened, but it’s nice to have that many fans out there and win a ball game like that,” said Hardy, who finished 3-for-5. CF Mike Cameron led Milwaukee with a 5 for 5 day(homer, 2 rbi) while 3b Bill Hall also had 3 hits for the winners.
This was a very strange game, although 7 runs scored we had 31 total hits(16 by the Pirates) to go with 6 walks(2 by Milwaukee) but both staffs sucked it up and got outs in big spots. Both clubs started their aces and LHs Pirates Paul Maholm(8-7,3.62) and Brewers CC Sabathia(8-0,1.59 in the NL) were both great over 6 innings. Maholm allowed 12 hits and 2 runs with 5 Ks and 2 walks. Sabathia is more flashy but in this game, was also more effective. He gave up 8 hits and 1 run with 5 Ks. Both #1s threw 96 pitches, with CC throwing 64 strikes to Maholm’s 61.
CF Nyjer Morgan had 3 hits to pace the Pirates, while SS Jack Wilson, C Ryan Doumit , RF Jason Michaels and rookie LJ Brandon Moss all had 2 hits apiece. Doumit singled in the game’s 1st run, with Milwaukee answering in the 6th with 2 runs via rbi singles from Cameron and pinchhitter Gabe Kapler. The team exchanged rbi from CFs(homer by Cameron in the 8th, single from Morgan in the 7th) to make the score 3-2 Brewers.
Flu ridden CF Nate McLouth tied the game with a pinch hit single, handing Salomon Torres(6-3, 2.68,25 saves) his 6th blown save in the 9th after Luis Rivas got on with a single and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Both pens held up until the 12 and Weeks walked with one out and then stole 2nd to set up Hardy’s hit. The Pirates blew a golden opportunity to win the game in the top of the frame when they loaded the bases with no outs. But a shallow fly out, K and ground out failed to produce a run.
Star of the Game-
Hardy and Cameron- The CF for his huge 5 for 5 day and JJ for a game winner on his promotion day
Adam Laroche and Manager John Russell got ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the 5th, Russell’s 1st career ejection came at the hands of home plate umpire Bob Davidson. “Bob continued to agitate the situation by coming toward our dugout and yelling,” Russell said. “They were exchanging words, we got Adam, pushed him down the dugout and he stopped talking and Bob kept coming. I didn’t think it was handled right.” Doug Mientkiewicz took his spot at 1b….Luis Rivas played 2b and was 1 for 6,batting 8th while Chris Gomez also subbed in for Andy Laroche at 3b, batting 7th and also going 1 for 6…4 Pirates relievers(Bautista,Capps,Grabow,Yates) allowed 2 hits in 5 frames, before Davis’ was touched for a run in the 12

Game 128 Recap-
Brewers All Star LF Ryan Braun homered, doubled and drove in 3 runs to lead Milwaukee past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 Saturday at Miller Park in Wisconsin. Veteran LH Tom Gorzelanny(6-8, 6.82) took the loss in his 1st ML start since being sent to minors July 4th. RH Jeff Suppan(9-7,4.58) gave 7 workman like innings to earn the win for the Brew Crew, while 1b Prince Fielder drove in 2 runs with 2 hits.
While his stat line was not impressive, Gorzelanny showed progress and marked improvement. Over 4 2/3 innings, the lefty allowed 6 runs and 7 hits. The big culprit was 2 out hits and an inability to put batters away.”It wasn’t a terrible start,” Pirates Manager John Russell said. “He got ahead and just couldn’t quite finish them off. He attacked the zone and was pretty efficient, but the two-strike hits and the two-out runs got him.”
Milwaukee jumped out with 2 runs in the first, as Fielder and RF Corey Hart had rbi hits. Braun added rbi hits in 2 consecutive innings in the 4th(homer) and 5th(2 run double) with Fielder’s single scoring the 6th run to make it 6-0. Milwaukee maxmized the 7 hits the totaled with some big situational hitting and only left 4 runners on base.
Suppan, an underrated veteran, earned his 4th straight victory with the help of 2 double plays and a big pickoff move out in the 1st inning. Over 7, he allowed 8 hits and 3 runs with 3 Ks.”Double plays are a pitcher’s best friend,” Suppan said. “I think I’ve had a lot more movement on my pitches and I’ve been able to stay out of big innings.” LF Brandon Moss’ rbi ground out and a solo homer from 1b Adam Laroche in the 8th plated 2 runs for Pittsburgh. The Pirates scraped an other run in the 8th vs a tiring Suppan and the Brewers pen closed it down there after, as LF Brian Shouse set up closer Salomon Torres for his 25th save.

St. Louis Cardinals RH Todd Wellemeyer(11-4,3.79) beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 3rd time this season, leading the Cards to a 11-2 victory Wednesday at Busch Stadium in Missouri. CF Rick Ankiel and C Jason Larue both hit 2 run home runs and St. Louis banged out 13 hits. To get his 11th win, Wellemeyer had to work-”They know me pretty well, I think that’s why they were battling me,” Wellemeyer said after laboring through five innings in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 11-2 victory on Wednesday night. “There was no inning when I wasn’t out of the stretch.”
Pirates RH Jason Davis(1-3,3.80) had his first tough outing for the club, over 3 2/3 innings, he allowed 9 hits and 8 runs(6 earned) with 3 walks and 1 K. “I don’t want this to happen again,” Davis said. “I need to eat innings, and I didn’t do that. If you just chalk it up, a domino effect can happen.” C Ryan Doumit(.333 on the year) had 3 hits including a 2 run homer in the 3rd. He was not impressed with his own numbers though,”Who cares?” Doumit said. “It has nothing to do with the game. It doesn’t matter how good anybody did at the plate.”
Wellemeyer went 5 to get the victory, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs(Doumit homer) while striking out 5 and walking 2. St Louis mixed and matched 4 relievers to get thru the last 4 frames. Larue had 3 rbi, while all world 1b Albert Pujols and Ankiel added 2 apiece. Pesky CF Skip Schumaker was 3 for 4 and on base all game. 3b Troy Glaus had a hit, 2 walks, 2 runs and an rbi.
